My Background

I have over thirty years teaching experience at secondary school level, although most of this time has been spent specialising in GCSE and A level teaching (generally Year 10 upwards). I have a BSc Honours degree in Mathematics and a PGCE Sec Maths (post graduate teaching qualification) so I am a fully qualified Maths teacher. I excelled myself at school in maths and related subjects (gaining the highest possible grade for each of my A levels; Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics) but it was through helping my peers during my sixth form years that I discovered that I was also very competent in teaching and explaining the subject. As a teacher I am friendly, approachable and patient and I really enjoy working with this age group.

My Teaching Experience

I have taught in several secondary schools including the state sector, the private sector, mixed and single sex schools. I have worked for one of the UK’s leading exam boards for many years as a senior examiner for GCSE, A level, International A level and Further Maths A level. This has given me an in-depth insight into the exam process which has proved invaluable as a teacher. I have tutored in Crowthorne for over twenty years and I have worked with students from a huge range of schools in the area including Crowthorne, Bracknell, Farnborough, Wokingham, Sonning, Reading, Ascot, Yateley, London and beyond.

How I can help

Students come to me with a variety of abilities; from those wishing to secure a solid pass in their exams through to those aspiring to a top grade. Fundamentally I ensure that topics are understood, and I offer help with any difficulties arising from present or past work. While everyone’s needs vary slightly, I commonly hear students say they can cope with most of the work in class, but they find it difficult to interpret questions in mixed exercises and tests. We are fortunate enough to have some excellent maths departments in the local area, but they are often pressed for time, especially with the new specifications. As a result, students sometimes find they are disappointed with their performance in tests and their predicted grades suffer. This is where my one to one teaching can help enormously as, in addition to assisting with day to day study, we can spend focused time practising a variety of different exam style questions. This allows students to fulfil their potential in every way.

I offer tutorials in GCSE Maths, A level Maths (covering Pure, Mechanics and Statistics) and A level Further Maths, including re-takes. Sessions are one hour long and are weekly during term time with holidays optional.

Availability

I usually have availability from September each academic year and I welcome early enquiries; many people reserve a weekly slot in advance. I also see some sixth formers during school hours if they are allowed out of school during their free periods. I can usually accommodate new students throughout the year in this way.

Other Options

My two sons also tutor maths and and have done since they were in in the sixth form. They are both currently studying for masters degrees in Engineering Science at Oxford University and each achieved four A*s in their A levels. Most importantly they have the ability to breakdown and explain maths at all levels. Through me, they have access to a wealth of specialist materials to support students’ learning and exam preparation (these are not openly available on the internet). My eldest son is already full up for the 2026/27 academic year, but Patrick has some availability.

DBS Checked

We are all DBS checked (current equivalent of the CRB check) and more than happy to provide certification if anyone wishes to see it.
